Why We Are New to Guthrie: The Real Story Behind Frena Self Care

My new friend Janet whacked me on the arm and said "you don't know anyone in Guthrie!" She had been naming names and I did not recognize a single one. She had no idea we were actually new here. Like, really new. So I figured it was time to share the real story.

Leaving Edmond for 80 Acres

In 2022 we sold our suburban home in Edmond and moved into a hunting trailer on 80 acres in Guthrie. I needed space. Trees, privacy, room to breathe. It felt crazy at the time but we did it anyway. I remember painting the trailer walls the same creamy white from our last custom home and sobbing. What had I done? I told Matt we could always resell if this did not work out.

When Everything Changed Overnight

A few months in, Matt bought a Razor. One night it flipped and his left arm was hanging on by a thread. Our entire life shifted overnight. I became a full time nurse caring for my husband while his only job was to rest and heal. We did not leave the house except for doctor visits and surgeries, for years. We were technically Guthrie residents but we were not really living here. Not yet.

Where Frena Began

During that time Matt would be set up on the couch watching TV or resting, and I would be in the kitchen learning how to render tallow. I spent hours practicing different combinations of tallow, butters and oils, filling pages and pages with notes and formulas. Looking back, that season of caring for him is where Frena began.

Finally Finding Our Community

It was not until I started going to the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce Coffees in October of 2025 that I actually started meeting people. I loved this town long before I knew anyone in it. Now I am getting to know the people too, and I love it even more. Matt and I are so thrilled to finally be a real part of this community.
